Heavy rain caused a section of VIP Road near Saraiya Crossing in Jajmau, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to cave in on August 26. Around 84 mm of rainfall was recorded between midnight and Wednesday morning, leaving several parts of the city waterlogged. The road collapse created a large pit, adding to difficulties for commuters in the area.

Water from the flooded road rushed into the opening, creating a dramatic waterfall-like scene. Residents were surprised by the unusual sight, while the visuals drew attention online. The incident also highlighted concerns over road conditions and drainage during heavy monsoon rainfall.

Heavy Rain Brings Kanpur Traffic To A Standstill

Several parts of Kanpur faced serious waterlogging after the overnight downpour. Roads in areas including VIP Road, Vishnupuri, Govind Nagar, Saket Nagar, Barra, Yashoda Nagar, Naubasta and Machharia were affected, with some stretches submerged under several feet of water.

Waterlogging was also reported around Kanpur Central railway station, making it difficult for passengers to reach the station. Roads leading towards Ghantaghar and other important parts of the city were also affected, disrupting normal traffic movement.

Road Collapse Raises Safety Concerns

The VIP Road cave-in has raised concerns because the route is regularly used by commuters. Amar Ujala reported that the road near Saraiya Crossing developed a deep pit during the rain and that local residents said the same spot had faced road collapses earlier as well.

The heavy rain also exposed drainage problems in other parts of Kanpur. At several locations, clogged drains and poor water flow left roads submerged, while residents and shopkeepers faced difficulties because rainwater entered low-lying areas.

Waterfall-Like Scene Goes Viral Online

The unusual flow of water into the road cavity quickly became a talking point on social media. Some users jokingly described the spot as Kanpur’s new tourist attraction, while others used the incident to question the city’s drainage system and road maintenance.

The online reaction also included political criticism, with some users linking the waterlogging and damaged roads to civic management and government accountability. Similar concerns have been raised by residents during earlier episodes of heavy rain in the city.

Monsoon Exposes City’s Infrastructure Problems

The incident is another reminder of the problems heavy rainfall can create when roads and drainage systems are unable to handle large amounts of water. The India Meteorological Department had forecast heavy rainfall for Kanpur on August 26.

While the waterfall-like visuals attracted attention, the road collapse remains a serious safety issue for commuters. With the monsoon continuing, the incident has renewed calls for better drainage, regular road inspections and quick repairs at locations vulnerable to waterlogging and cave-ins.
